Replacing or Re-fitting your crank Arms

Replacing or re -fitting your crank arms (pedal arms) is a simple process but without following these instructions carefully you could easily go wrong.

The cranks arms are attached to the bottom bracket axle via a square taper design and they are each then securely fastened  to the axle by a bolt. In order to remove or fit cotterless cranks a special tool called a crank puller is required (Picture A).

Note that this tool is not included in the tool kit that arrived with your bicycle however it can be purchased at any local bicycle  shop  for £5- £7.

Tips and Warnings

During the manufacturing process of your bicycle, the cranks are pressed on by machinery. When fitting or replacing your crank, please remember after inserting the axle to use a rubber mallet and tap the crank lightly onto the axle. Without doing this your crank will come lose and may even fall off.

If you hear creaking coming from your cranks, it could be many things - your cranks, bottom bracket, pedals, frame, or even something as remote as your quick release skewers. If you are unable to isolate the problem, bring your bike to a bike shop.
